Drying Fish

August 3rd 2015

Dried fish is a traditional food in Shetland. Men would catch fish for their own use and salt it then hang it outside to dry.

During the winter the dried fish was boiled and served with mashed tatties (potatoes) and often with fat from a roast or melted margarine or butter.

Keep a look out on your travels around Shetland - you might see fish hung out to dry on washing lines or as shown here against buildings.

This was taken on 2 August very near to Belmont House.
