Fault Line exposed
Unst is a geologists paradise as is much of Shetland.
The recent storms have removed much of the sand from Norwick beach (we're sure it will be back by summer!) and exposed the rocks either side of a fault line between the oceanic crust and the continental crust. The dark rock to the left if Phyllite on the continental side and the lighter rock on the right is Serpentine/Soapstone on the oceanic side. Much of Unst is serpentine giving a unique landscape and vegetation. We even have talc (a soft form of soapstone) quarries.
